International Women’s Day
March 8th is International Women’s Day! To celebrate, Modere is proud to feature six incredible women in history and today who exemplify our core values.
Authentic: Frida Kahlo (b.1907 – d.1954) was a famous Mexican painter who used her art as a way to explore difficult topics such as identity, gender, and race. She stayed true to herself, even when others criticized her art and expression.
Vibrant: Ruth Bader Ginsburg (b.1933—) is the second woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court, and even at age 86, she is still a force to be reckoned with. She has been a strong advocate for gender equality and has worked hard to change both laws and minds regarding discrimination, pay, and more.
Extraordinary: The late Katherine Johnson (b.1918 – d.2020), who recently passed at the age of 101, was a brilliant NASA mathematician who contributed to the success of America’s first human spaceflight. Her skill and intelligence were more reliable than the computers, and her assertiveness carved a path for other women of color in similar careers.
Disruptive: Rosa Parks (b.1913 – d.2005) was a civil rights leader from Alabama, who refused to give up the bus seat she deserved. That action, and subsequent arrest, triggered the Montgomery Bus Boycott in December 1956, which eventually resulted in the Supreme Court declaring that segregation on public transit systems was unconstitutional. The impact of her legacy still inspires us today.
Compassionate: Florence Nightingale (b.1820 – d.1910) was an English nurse during the Crimean War who improved sanitation practices and sparked worldwide healthcare reform. She was known as “the Lady with the Lamp,” checking on her patients throughout the night. She looked after hundreds of soldiers who would otherwise have died without her care.
Humble: Malala Yousafzai (b.1997—) is the youngest person to ever receive the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17 in 2014. She advocated for the right to an education and survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban on her way home from school in Pakistan. Despite threats and opposition, she continues to be an outspoken defender of girls’ education.
